The Columbia Boathouse looks to create a means to open up the landscape to the waterfront by merging the Columbia boathouse typology with the exterior hill landscape flow, while also using the boathouse as a means for education and sustainability for the site.
The concept for the boathouse came from analyzing the site through its programs. We saw the program of the boathouse and the community coming together, through the surrounding park and the sports campus of Columbia behind the site. We used these programs to create a building that merged the programs in the beginning entrance but then split as decisions and programs changed, allowing for each participant to seek different solutions.
Community could interact with the rower typology using greenery from the walk-able green roof and the wetlands clean water bio-tanks. These integrations of sustainable aspects of design allowed us to create educational programs that split from the rower typology of the site, but allowed each to be observed by each other in their separate states.
